LA Metro Improves Storage Safety and Efficiency With Modula VLMs

The company needs to keep expanding and upgrading to meet the growth of the railway system business

Location:

LA, US

Background

Los Angeles is one of the largest and most populous counties in the United States, with 93 stations and 169 kilometers of operating routes. The Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority is responsible for operating all public transportation services in Los Angeles, including subway and light rail, bus rapid transit, urban buses, suburban buses and bus express lines.

Pain Points

The company needs to keep expanding and upgrading to meet the growth of the railway system business. The existing spare parts storage area is seriously insufficient and cannot be expanded.

Solution

Metro, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, was looking for an automated storage solution that would help them store a greater number of parts in a given location. Shareholders wanted an automated storage solution manufactured stateside, and Modula was able to successfully bid on the project because it was a perfect match for their needs.

With the installation of Modula MX50, one VLM covers an area of only 9 square meters but can store more than 50 square meters of parts, which greatly improves the space utilisation and expands the storage volume by 5 times. At the same time, picking speed and accuracy have increased dramatically, allowing repair service orders to be processed faster.

Modula VLMs bring parts in front of operators for picking or restocking. This greatly reduces the risk of parts being damaged during manual picking and handling, reducing unnecessary costs.

In addition, the safety features, such as the photoelectric safety barriers of the Modula VLMs, can make the operator get the best safety protection.

Eric O’Connor, Senior Manager, Inventory Management, said:

“The Metro is in a stage of rapid development, and we are expanding our rail transportation business. The Modula automatic warehouse can help us make full use of the space to store parts and inventory.”

Anita Stephens, Stock Clerk – Logistics Group, said:

“Modula VLMs are very strong and durable, and they are vital to the growth of our business.”
