Tests have shown that the warehouse withstand horizontal accelerations of over 1 G:
- No damage on warehouse
- No damage on trays
- Minimal movement of the trays (which remain in place on the supporting shelves)
- Resumption of normal operation
Modula Anti-seismic
Modula’s solution was to combine anti-seismic solutions with seismic isolation.
The former solution involves reinforcing the warehouse structure, while the latter isolates it from the energy produced by seismic acceleration.
Now Modula decided to change direction, not to make the structures too rigid, as this would make the warehouse too heavy, but to concentrate on analysis of the seismic movement and of the effects on its acceleration, especially the horizontal component of peak ground acceleration (PGA).
The seismic isolator device only start to work in the event of an earthquake, while in no-seismic situations, the device does not affect the operation of the warehouse at all.
All calculations and simulations were validated in testing at Pavia’s Eucentre Foundation, the European benchmark centre for research and training in earthquake risk.
