Safran is a world-class manufacturer of aero-engines and equipment that offers high-tech solutions for aircraft, helicopters, missiles, aerospace propulsion and its equipment for both civil and military markets.
Pain Points
Safran Aero Engines Services’ service center at Brussels Airport has 250 employees dedicated to the maintenance and overhaul of the company’s CFM56-2, CFM56-7, LEAP-1 and CFM engines.
The aviation industry has a wide variety of materials, and the storage conditions are harsh. During the complex maintenance and overhaul process, along with the storage and selection of a large number of spare parts, using the traditional shelf system not only cannot be stored efficiently and accurately but also easily make picking errors or be taken away by unauthorised personnel.
Solution
After investigation, Safran purchased 7 Modula automated storage units, which can handle up to 500 orders per day. At the same time, the footprint of aircraft maintenance and repair depots has been reduced by 80%. These include a machine with padded trays for storing large but fragile tools. To prevent theft and improve traceability, Safran operations have also installed cameras and software, which work with Safran’s ERP system to record images of trays as they are opened during the day to track the flow of parts. Modula VLMs are now an integral part of Safran Aero Engine Services’ maintenance work.
